is that common practice? it just seems kind of, i don't know, uncool to me. especially dowdy. maybe it's just me.
We know that 5th year seniors Sylvester Crawford and Ricky Dowdy won't return this year. DD mentioned that there would be some attrition. Any speculation about others? Trying to look for other 5th year players that haven't really contributed much to this point. The only one I can come up with is maybe Ryan Cheek. Thoughts?

I believe it is fairly common. I know TOB let a couple of 5th year players go when he came in. Guys that aren't expected to contribute on the field, but have had the opportunity to finish their degree after 5 years. I'm sure both Crawford and Dowdy were given the opportunity to finish their degrees here at NC State this spring and summer, but they both wanted to play one last season of football and needed to move on to do so. Good luck to them.
Seems fair to me if they understand the way it is up front, some of those guys may not have gotten on scholly to start with if previous 5th year players weren't let go. If you've had a RS year that's even more reason to be able to graduate in 4 years plus summer sessions. It just opens up opportunities for the next group of kids. Some of them may have to get a job or small loan to finish their degree. Not a bad deal.
Question is, if they don't graduate, how much does it hurt our program's academic statistics.

Interesting snippet from Rivals.com yesterday about 2013 recruits that could contribute right away:
7. RB Matt Dayes, Cypress Bay (Fla.) Weston
Dayes led Broward County in rushing this year with 1,878 yards on 266 carries and 28 touchdowns. The three-star prospect took his team to the Class 8A state championship this fall. The 5-foot-10, 195-pounder can run through you or around you. He has a nice burst and vision while being patient setting up blocks. New Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren is getting a quality back who should be an All-ACC performer during his career in Raleigh.
Interesting recruiting story to wind up the cycle (not really to do with us, but an interesting story nonetheless):

Troy Fumagalli is gray shirting this coming year for Wisconsin. Guess he really wanted to stay at a big time football school. He turned down three big time full rides and he will be a walk on for one or two years it said in this article: http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/2013...cruiting-class
For those wondering, Lucas Wilson still has not decided...maybe waiting to see if he gets a last minute full ride offer. Word is we are only offering a preferred walkon spot.
Maybe because we are planning on making McKever a TE/WR... I know he is staying at WR, so that is my guess
Is rb Grayson Marshall still an option?
He did not commit on NSD, but I have not heard if he's picked a school since then. I would assume we are not looking at him since we signed three RBs in the class UNLESS he was being considered for another position. He's a bit of an odd case, he never really got into the whole recruiting scene and almost seemed put off by it.
"@FO_SammyBatten: Mount Tabor HS TE Lucas Wilson is considering becoming a preferred walk-on at #NCState. Answer should be final sometime this week."
Guess we'll find out something sometime soon.
A preferred walk-on is different from a normal one in what way? First dibs on an open schollie?
"Be still and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations;
I will be exalted in the earth.
The Lord of hosts is with us,
The God of Jacob is our protector."
Psalm 45 (46) 11-12
If TE Lucas Wilson does walk on he will join New Bern HS QB Josh Taylor who accepted a preferred walk-on spot with NC State for the 2013 class.
Good news, Lucas Wilson has indeed decided to walkon at State. Would love to see him earn a scholly.
was he not offered schollies by anyone?

Not anyone of consequence, also he slow played his recruitment in hopes of getting a better offer and the others he had evaporated when they were filled. He's likely to pick up a scholly pretty quickly once we see where things fall either prior to the start of the season or after this upcoming season.
Welcome to the Pack!
Just spoke to QB Christopher Perry 6'5 195lb from North Pitt High School - Bethel, NC
He was offered a preferred walk-on spot and will join the Pack

What are the kids speed and strength? 40 time etc.

Well, he's 6'5, so probably not very fast. Also, he's a QB, and only 195lbs, so probably not real strong. All assumptions, of course.
Well Cam Newton is 6'5" and i can think of plenty other 6'5" athletes that are fast. But like you said those are assumptions so i wont hold you accountable later lol
But i was asking bc I just wondering if his athletic ability was in place to challenge for some PT..

Not very impressive for a spread offense, but thats prob bout the speed of Thomas
