Yep, hearing the same but we'll have to wait and see. Then of course we'll have to weather ten and a half months of other programs going after him.

Wish football would add an early signing period like hoops.

Ya know, i wish there was too. I wonder why there isnt. A lot happens between now and the signing period but even though kids change their mind in basketball all the time with verbals, for me, there always seems to be a better amount of loyalty from the players when they commit to football early. James Summers aside.

Jerod Fernandez sounds like a perfect fit for a Tom O'Brien football team, cant deny that. Would love to see him run with the pack!

Long time no post for me, let's see if i can still do this.

I LOVE Jerod's tape. He looks very instinctive and I think that we would be getting a steal. He looks like a younger, faster Sterling Lucas body-type with the play-making ability of Terrell and Nate. I hope we can get this kid, him and Tenuta would be a great combo

If it's the tweet I'm thinking about, they are confused. Nothing for us to be worried about.

Also, looks like Fernandez has picked up offers from Rutgers and UCF. As usual once we (TOB) offer, some of the lesser talent evaluators try to jump on our recruits.

Reed basically welcome Nichols to the Wolfpack via Twitter. I was shocked and worried, but apparently it is completely legal. As long as its legal, go for it Reedy!

That's the tweet, but the confusion is he was tweeting with his new brother in law, not Nichols.

It's interesting that the idea of an Early Signing Period was mentioned on this forum. Coach O'Brien mentioned something last year about several coaches around the country thinking that an Early Signing Period would be a good idea for football so the "verbal" commitment would actually mean something before NSD and so that kids could not be so wish-wash about their "verbal" to a particular school then switch it right before NSD leaving one school high and dry and scrambling to find someone else to take that said recruits scholarship.

As far as Twitter and Facebook, since they are the new social media outlets for coaches to use instead of text messaging, there are some regulations in place by the NCAA regarding coaching contacting recruits through them, but they are so vague that most coaches are seeing Twitter and Facebook as very effective recruiting tools without having to send text messages or make as many phone calls (calls and messages are very strictly monitored by the NCAA).

    New offer to report:

LB Devaris Brunson - 6'1", 210, 4.47 40 yd - Attends Lake City HS in SC. 4* OLB on scout (their #14 OLB in the country).

    We are Brunson's first offer.

Here's scout.com's blurb about him: Brunson has a nose for the football. He stays around the ball, he reacts quickly, and he can really close on the ball. When he tackles, he tackles with force, and he doesn't just stand up and stop the runner, but he forces him back. He is strong and he plays with a lot of pure strength. He can still work on his coverage skills, playing in traffic, and shedding would-be blockers. He has the tools to play inside or outside. - Chad Simmons

Target QB Heys McMath from Woodberry Forest HS in VA was in attendance for our spring game.

McMath is 6'4", 190. Unrated on scout or rivals so far. Rivals has him as a pro-style QB.

New commit, welcome aboard Ford Howell OLB!

  17. #257
Our coaches have set their focus back on recruiting since the spring game and it is paying off big time. LB is the position that is being recruited with the most emphasis this year, look for us to land around 4 for this class.

Ford Howell is another, very instinctive LB, with a great football IQ, who isn't slow, but is not gonna blow you away with his speed and quickness, but he very rarely makes a step in the wrong direction, which for a LB taking a step in the right direction can be better than running a 4.3 the wrong direction. He visited a couple months ago for our Jr. day and really loved everything and the coaches were able to wrap him up this week. I'll be out of the country and have no internet for about a week, but I expect at least one more commit by the time I am back.

    Other LBs to watch-

Jerod Fernandez FL-who also is known for great instincts and punishing tackles. Just offered by Rutgers and hometown UCF yesterday, but scheduled to announce Monday, and we look very good for him, but he postponed his announce date.

Larenz Bryant NC- Freak athlete and will be a star. RB/LB in HS and just ran in the low 4.4's at a shrine combine. Clemson leads with USC behind, but our coaches love him and are working on him hard. He is the player I want most in probably the entire class.

Justin Bridges-Thompson SC- Long rangy and athletic guy, who plays a lot of S in HS. We have been on him for a while and look pretty good, but if USC decides to offer he will most likely commit.

Jonathan Alston NC- Another big, athletic guy, who attends Brandon Barnes' former HS. Plays WR and LB, and is leaning towards WR in college, but is athletic enough to do both, but has enormous potential at LB. We are in his group of favorites.

Hey Guy, what if USC takes Bryant and we take Brunson up above? Brunson is 210 right now, but could easily be 225-235 next fall.

    Ford Howell info:

6'2", 226, 4.7 40 yd. Currently a 3* on rivals. Looks like another recruit that we caught early on in the recruiting process before other schools had a chance to evaluate him completely.

Here are a couple of videos of Howell in action:

From watching the videos, it appears that he has the instincts to be a good LB. 4.7 says that he is not the fastest in the world but there were several plays where he caught the RB before he could get outside. Look forward to seeing him in red and white next year.

Absolutely love Alston's film...looks much better at LB than WR imo...

I just hope we get Jerod. I have a feeling that kid is going to be a huge playmaker and that he will be getting a lot of attention soon

What i was saying a few pages back was that Chuck owned NC and the top recurits from our state. We should atleast be doing that and were not? I look at Clemson and i understand their football history and stadium and all that but until recently they were average recuriters and since Dabo took over they have had a top class each year and the product on the field hasn't been the swaying factor for the kids to come to Clemson why are they up hear stealing NC kids and we aren"t even in there final 4 most of the time???? Don't get it! Not trying to beat up on O'brien but not real difficult to win 8 or maybe 9 games a year when you have 4 non conference pasties. What he did at B. College and same thing here. Win 4 easy Non Conference games and go .500 in league 8 win season. Not real difficult to do. Win 8 and have 2 of those Non Conference games be a solid team ( SEC, Big 10, 12 etc. then u've done something. With the way we schedule now he ought to win 9 atleast. You know we have BC,Wake, Clem, FlaSt,MD & UNC every year then the other 2 are rotating. Of those 6 you should consistantly beat 4 and sometimes sneak a 5th win in there and then win the other 2 against the rotation and you have your 5 or 6 conference wins but we can't do that but once. If Clem & Fla st. beat you each year u still have BC, Wake, MD & Unsux that's 4 wins. Take 1 of the 2 rotating and there your 5 -3 mark and overall 9-3. Not a impossible request when you look at it that way.

Dabo was their recruiting coordinator for Tommy Boy (Bowden). He was the one that got CJ Spiller to initially visit Clemson when he wasn't interested at all in the tiggers. Clem(p)son has always had good recruiting. One reason is that we do not have a big presence in the Western part of NC. Charlotte is about as close to Clemson as it is to State/Raleigh. Because of that, UGA, USCar, Tennessee, Clemson, and the SEC powers that be have been able to run rampant in that area for recruits.

There was that weird pipeline from Greensboro to Cal for a few years. Part of that was Keenan Allen wanted to play with his brother, who was a QB who transferred from Buffalo to Cal (kind of a two for 1 deal, kinda like Crisp and his adopted brother Singer, who never made it to State).

I really wish that we would have a bigger presence in Charlotte. Too many UNC Walmart fans there, and it is a great recruiting area. Granted, Independence is not what it was when Coach Knox was there, but when you look at them, Butler, Audrey Kell, and now Philip O'Berry (still weird to say they have good recruits), it is a needed recruiting target spot. Heck, even Gastonia Ashbrook would be a good place to strike some relationships (Jheranie Boyd, UNC WR; Norketius Otis, UNC LB/DE; soon Nortavius Otis, lil brother LB/DB).

Bottom line: We beat Tennessee, possibly run the table for the ACC, and start imposing our will on SEC teams, we start getting these stud recruits from NC. We need home state guys and NC has the talent to do it. I dont mind the kids from Ohio and Jersey, but I want some Southern-style speed!

Your right we've never hit Western Part of State hard. Never understood that but we did make up for that by getting the majority of the remaining big recurits in rest of state we don't do that anymore. 2012 calss ranked 9th in league that included Pitt & Cuse' but 9th ranks us below MD, UNC ( on Prob) Pitt . 2011 class was dead last behind Duke,BC, Wake never should happen ever. In my opinion if UVA can be in top 6 of league each year so should we. MD is in top 6 each year also.

  27. #267
2011 was a very very underrated class for the amount of athleticism that we brought in. I like that class a lot and most of those kids came from schools that were not perennial powers or even winning programs. Maurice Morgan was the lone star on a terrible team, maybe 1 win.

I think some emphasis needs to be placed on recruiting rankings, but it should be focused on how coachable our kids are

One more thing. I understand were not gonna consistantly get all 4&5* but we need to be in conversation for them and then bring in a few along with good class of 3* and some 2* but you have to have a few 4 & ocassional 5* to turn heads we don't even sniff them. I also understand the logic some use that so & so was a1 or 2 * and look at him now. Yeah that happens but on a team of 60 or more of 2 * how many are gonna be that diamond in rough. I tend to go with proven logic recruit studs each year and play for title each year. ALA, LSU, OhST. in hunt every year cause they recruit studs. Can we do what they do NO but why can't we atleast recruit the studs in NC. we do that and do it every year and sooner or later we'll be Conference contenders each year like VAtech and Fla. St. Recruiting matters alot i don't care what some say about obrien finding talent he keeps 2 &3 * it and will be mid pack dwellers. U watch

  29. #269
Bama- great great coaching. They get who they want, but if they arn't 5*, they get coached to that level.

LSU- Freak athletes...has nothing to do with Les Miles (nutjob)

tOSU- Tressel was a great coach, Urban is going to make them scary good

FSU is sadly on the rise and it is scaring the piss out of me

The last recruit that we got from the far western part of the state was Brosius, who went to Tuscola in Waynesville.

    Anyway, on to new news:

Target 3* DB/ATH Pharoh Cooper from Havelock HS (NC) is scheduled to announce for South Carolina today and will be taken off of our board.

3* RB Augustus Edwards has just been given an offer from us. Attends HS on Staten Island, NY. 6'1", 222, 4.5 40 yd.

Yo packman, you think with Edwards weight he will be moved to LB, or do you think teams would keep him as a bruising back? Reason I ask is because a 220+lb LB running a 4.5 40 would be nice to have.

  33. #273
South Carolina has had national success lately, State hasn't. When you're as unflashy as Tom O'Brien, you have to win and send players to the NFL to recruit well.

For those who are disappointed in the job State has done, here are the ACC records over the past two years (in order of total wins) and NFL draftees this year:
    Virginia Tech 22-6, 15-1 (3)
    Florida State 19-8, 11-5 (4)
    NC State 17-9, 9-7 (5)
    Clemson 16-11, 10-6 (4)
    UNC 15-11, 7-9 (2)
    Georgia Tech 14-12, 9-7 (1)
    Miami 13-12, 8-8 (6)
    UVA 12-13, 6-10 (1)
    Boston College 11-14, 7-9 (1)
    Maryland 11-14, 6-10 (0)
    Wake Forest 9-16, 6-10 (4)
    Duke 6-18, 2-14 (0)

Add on the fact that State should be one of the stronger teams in the ACC next season and will send quite a few more guys to the NFL (including a likely first rounder in Amerson), and State's recruiting pitch is pretty good. It takes a while to build a great program, especially when the previous coach leaves the program in shambles, but now that the program is built strong and deep, the floor for every season is 7-8 wins, and as State establishes itself as the marquee program in North Carolina, recruiting and wins will only increase.

I know he's not mentioned in this way yet, but I'm predicting Mike Glennon will also be a 1st round pick in next year's draft.

  35. #275
@shotter28 I tend to agree. If he is not a 1st round pick than I think he would be no worse than a 2nd round pick.
I could also see a couple of our 4 seniors on the Oline going in the first 3 rounds and I would be shocked if Wolf and Bishop aren't drafted.
The other person I am going to be interested to see this year is Mario Carter. I certainly think he has NFL potential so it will be interesting to see what kind of year he and Asa Watson have. Carter could easily be another draftee.
There might be a few others that could go in the later rounds but I could see another 5 or 6 making it next year if we can have another good year.

  36. #276
even though we dont have that many schollys for next year(?) a key to our recruiting will be to punk Tennessee on television, just to get the people talking and buzzin and then beat Connecticut. Fly under the radar and just go about our business and then beat UNC (again). By then we should be in the talk for some major bowl games. Recruiting should start to take shape then for the next few years as we'll be on tv a lot more with our "quiet success".

I think that a kid that has a big year is Tyrrell Burriss and TY McGill. I think that they proved how good they can be last year by making a push for playing time. I also think that Drew Davis and Robert Caldwell are also going to be big next year

Totally agree about McGill, expect him to blow up big time.

I would not be surprised if we do not have one of the best front fours by the end of the year. We had some extremely productive guys coming back and several DL coming in that could be impact freshman. With a inexperienced LB corp though they are going to have to be really good so that everything will move a little slower for the LB until they fully acclimate to the speed of the game.
