    And one....

If you served your country, that's great and thanks.

On the other hand, you don't have some special call upon what either makes us great or how we should behave.

Sorry, you haven't earned some special right to inform us about what it means to be an American.

The men who fought and died on Suribachi didn't expect such a right and you shouldn't either.

Enough with dismissing the opinions of those who didn't serve. They're your fellow citizens.

i hope you are not refering to me, howler. if you are, you totally misread my posts. my service in no way makes me your judge. we all do have a right to our own opinions and beliefs. the problem comes when we make it personal. just wanted you to know.

we're good H. i think, because it's an election year, because of the economy and because i see the downhill spiral that is our country i'm a little sensitive about stuff like that. what bothers me most is not the passion of the older people, regardless what side of the fence we're on, but the prevailing apathy of a good chunk of the younger ones. i don't think they are stupid, they just don't think it matters. btw, if you are young and reading this, don't think that i'm saying all young people are in this group. i know better. you would do well to google red skelton's "Pledge of Allegiance". it's worth watching. if you did die in service to this country, it would be nice to know what you are dying for. here, let me do it for you...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBTyTWOZCM

THE problem, as I see it, is that our youth are being taught that they MUST show acceptance, and they MUST RESPECT(!!!) every other culture, creed, religion, nationallity, and NATION/COUNTRY(!!!) but their OWN!!! ESPECIALLY NOT THEIR OWN!!!

Some 40 odd years later, the ex-hippies, flower children, and the Flag burners have taken over, and they are having a field day in (NEGATIVELY!!!) influencing anything and everything that ONCE WORKED in this country. It's a culture gone afoul, and as much as I hate it for them, you surely can't blame the kids for just following this extremely misguided lead.

How those people have somehow been granted the moral high ground in this Nation, is something that canNOT be explained using any rational thought processes.

I think you're taking that way too far.

As for respect for country, I just don't think most young people think much about it unless some external threat arises. And as for any lack of respect, that seeming lack of respect is never more evident than during periods of economic hardship.

i really didn't either. not too much. when i became a business owner, that's when i really took notice. a lot of things you can't see until the blinders are removed. being a business owner for the last 10 years has yanked off my blinders concerning politics and economics, and, most importantly, core values. it appears we have no core values any longer. that's called moral decay. it started somewhat with kicking God out of schools. i'm not going to say any more, but let's just say that me and fred have quite a bit in common, but i have a few people skills. fred don't give a rip.

75% of Americans identify themselves as Christians but you think "kicking God out of our schools" has led to a decline in core values?

Looks to me the real problem is such teaching has been kicked out of the home and I'd guess that began with the rise of two wage earner families.

55 years ago here in Charlotte, I recited the Lords Prayer every day along with the Pledge of Allegiance. There was no other religious teaching. Dropping the Lord's Prayer and "under God" from the Pledge did not, IMO, lead to the moral decline you see.

you are right, howler. it wasn't the cause of the moral decline. it was, however, a symptom of the disease. the first obvious sign that nationwide moral decay had begun. you can think of several more examples as time went on, roe vs wade, etc. none were the cause or "lead to" moral decay, but because of moral decay. your second statement is dead on the money. the problem is not two income families, so much, more than that it's single income families with the mother being that single income. where are the men, fathers, husbands in America? that's the problem.

Well E, I'll just say that I do have some, and use what people skills I have when I feel that they are actually necessary. But when I want to get a point across because I think it's important and needs to be said in a way that can be easily and clearly understood, then you're right, I do not give a rip. Beyond that, you are right. And Howler is right as well. No, taking prayer out of schools wasn't THE single aspect that set us spinning out of control and heading straight down the toilet. Just as having prayer in schools for centuries wasn't THE single aspect that made this Nation become what it is, or rather, was. There was a delicate balance in play, and now that balance has been intentionally shifted to one side. The factors involved in creating this shift are way, waaay too many to list on this forum. But I do have to say this Howler, that simply placing the blame on a single entity, and blaming JUST parents for all that is wrong right now with this society right now, is a completely assanine argument and just another cop out used to avert attention to anywhere but the real causes. Parents cannot parent, and teachers cannot teach, and whatever all of the gazillion causes there are for it being set up that way, IT IS, precisely organized, and seemingly SET UP that way for a reason. What that reason is... ??? Or rather, what the thinking is behind allowing our values, morals, and traditions to become something to laugh at, and to spit on, well sir, I will quarantee, none of that sort of thinking was initiated by any Moms and Dads sitting at home on their living room sofas.

I'd certainly love to, and would be more than happy to further elaborate on my thoughts on these topics, but this isn't exactly the place.

You can also go straight to unread directly from the forum. Just look at the topic you want to go to and then click the little blue down arrow looking thing to the the left of the topic name. It will take you straight there! No arrow means there isn't a new post since you last looked at it.
